National CBD Day
By: Sagar Patel
With the summer quickly passing us by, the month of August has a very special day for the Cannabis community. CBD, cannabis’s more timid cousin, has its national day of recognition coming up on August 8th. CBD stands for cannabidiol and is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can be consumed by humans as well as canines. CBD is more loosely derived from hemp than it is derived from cannabis like THC.

The alternative cannabinoid product has reached popularity in recent years for many reasons. Even though CBD still shares the same stigma that THC has, it is vastly different. After its discovery in 1940 at the University of Illinois, CBD has shown to provide all the positive attributes of cannabis consumption without the psychoactive properties that THC traditionally has to produce a “high”. According to a 2019 Gallup Poll, over 55% of Americans from the ages of 18-64 have tried or habitually use CBD. This number is expected to grow every year because in 2018 the federal Farm Bill legalized the use of hemp in certain medications. While CBD isn’t fully legal on the federal level, it is much closer today than it ever was. So much so that celebrity endorsements have already started coming in.
Snoop Dogg is not the only celebrity endorser for cannabis products. Celebrities and athletes all over the world have endorsed the usage of CBD. Quite a few celebrities use CBD products as a part of their beauty regimen or to just relax. According to US Weekly, Jennifer Aniston uses CBD oil to unwind after a long day and Kim Kardashian uses CBD infused beauty products on a daily basis. US soccer star Megan Rapinoe has promoted CBD use while still playing and even has her own CBD line called “Mendi”, according to NPR.org . Rapinoe , like many, use CBD as a form of recovery after what their bodies go through on the field. Even the NFL has acknowledged that CBD can be used by athletes as a form of recovery, according to Sports Illustrated.

This August 8th will mark only the 5th year of National CBD day. If you would like to celebrate you can consume CBD in various ways. This includes smoking ,vaping, pills, using CBD lotion, oils and consumption through edibles. Or even have a conversation with friends and family on the use of CBD. You may enlighten someone on a change in their life that would include CBD or at the very least help change the stigma of CBD.
