Currently, as of 2022, there are only four steps in the United States where cannabis is completely illegal. Those states are Idaho, Wyoming, South Carolina, and Kansas. According to Norton Hare, “ A first-time charge of possession of marijuana in Kansas is a Class A misdemeanor, which means that a conviction is punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine. “ (Norton Hare 2018).
The 2022 session has opened and what is being discussed for the state of Kansas is the possible legalization of medical marijuana. According to the Marijuana Policy Project, “Gov. Laura Kelly (D) has repeatedly voiced her support for medical cannabis. Still, the Senate must act in order to bring a compassionate, effective medical cannabis program to Kansas.” (2022). Legalization of medical marijuana would be a step in the right direction for further legalization for years to come, as seen with other states such as Rhode Island where medical marijuana legalization opened up the path for the legalization of recreational use in the upcoming years after initial legalization.
The topic of medical cannabis legalization in session is a path in the right direction for those who inhabit Kansas and have had to deal with unjust court cases over an outdated law that has been modified to work well in the modern-day where cannabis is more common than it was before.
