Canines and Cannabis
Educate BEFORE You Medicate!
The science of cannabis and its effects on our pet’s brains is a growing topic of interest lately. Because researchers are interested too, we are learning quite a bit about how animals process it, and the findings may surprise you.
We all know Cannabis contains compounds called cannabinoids and tons of other good stuff. The most well-known being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). These compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in both humans and animals, including dogs. The ECS plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes, such as mood, appetite, pain sensation, and immune response.
When dogs consume cannabis, THC binds to the cannabinoid receptors in their brains, leading to psychoactive effects. Because they have more receptors that bind to THC in their brains as well as their immune system, salivary glands and skin, they are extremely sensitive. Interaction can result in altered behavior, impaired coordination, and even toxicity in some cases. Lots of people report using full spectrum to treat illnesses in their fur babies, but this can be super dangerous, so check with your vet before playing doctor and definitely keep recreational cannabis products out of reach of pets to prevent accidental ingestion.
On the other hand, CBD has gained attention for its potential therapeutic benefits in animals as well as humans. CBD does not produce the same psychoactive effects as THC and may have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anxiolytic properties. Some pet owners have turned to CBD products to help manage their dogs’ anxiety, pain, and seizures. However, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of CBD on dogs’ brains and to determine safe and effective dosages. It is crucial to note that dogs may react differently to cannabis compared to the way you do. “Start low and go slow” is a great motto to follow. Additionally, the size and weight of a dog can influence how they metabolize and process cannabis compounds.
Do your research, talk to trusted resources, and use only products that are labeled with high CBD and low or non-detected THC. Show them the love they deserve!
