What Do You Mean Cannabis Has Sugar Levels?

Read Time:2 Minute, 19 Second

I was pretty confident in my knowledge of what types of things we consume that hold high contents of sugar: soda, candies, fast-food. What I wasn’t expecting was to keep seeing “Sugar Levels” pop-up every time I read about cannabis. So, what do they really mean when they say, “Sugar levels”? Are they natural or added? Does cannabis hold high concentrations, like the previously mentioned treats and goodies? What’s it all done for?

Even fruits and vegetables have their natural sugars, I have no idea as to why I wasn’t expecting the same from cannabis- but regardless of my lack of common sense, I was still shocked and confused every time I read about sugar levels. According to Adam Parsons for Royal Queen Seeds, cannabis needs sugar in order to grow. Stating that, “Sugar is so essential to the growth process, and how the cultivator can boost sugar production with various methods.”

Every plant needs a certain level of sugar in order to grow, its science. When it comes to cannabis, it all depends on the size and harvest time. Growers must work to ensure they distribute the sugar correctly in order to maintain the integrity of their harvest. By not doing so, they risk the flower’s growth potential, “But it’s not just about adding supplements; sugars must reach the right places throughout the plant” (Parsons). When it comes to growing cannabis, sugar is so integral that it often has to be added in. So, does this mean it holds high concentrations?

Not necessarily. Since the sugar has to be distributed evenly, it is not as concentrated as other consumptions. Although, you have to also take into account how you are choosing to use your flower; if it’s in an edible or just various pieces broken up for various methods. It all plays a role on your sugar intake levels. There are even studies being done on the use of cannabis to help treat diabetes. It is believed that cannabis can help with maintaining blood sugar levels with those dealing with type 2 diabetes (Braun, MPH, RD).  As we are starting to create a more pro-cannabis mentality here in the states, we are discovering cannabis’ natural healing benefits and becoming more open to those methods in health care.

Although cultivated cannabis at times needs added sugars, it’s hardly an insane amount when compared to the other things we consume in our day to day. Even though sugar levels in cannabis shouldn’t be too high, it is still something to look into while shopping. There are so many strains out there, each one is so different from the other. Find what works for you!
