Cannabis in Thailand

In 2020, Thailand became the first Asian country to decriminalize cannabis for medical and research use. This sparked a change in how cannabis was viewed in Thailand, and the stigma surrounding cannabis since then has diminished where now cannabis is used to boost the country’s tourism, but how?
Since the decriminalization of cannabis in 2020, tourist spots in Thailand, such as restaurants, have started to incorporate more menu items that have cannabis-infused in them. “Thailand legalized the growing, sale and consumption of cannabis in a series of changes to the nation’s narcotics laws between February 2019 and January 2022” (Jacob Lewis 2022). Now CBD or the actual marijuana plant are seen in food dishes and infused into refreshing new drinks for anyone to try, which has become very popular for tourists, diversifying Thailand’s tourism as they are currently the only Asian country to decriminalize the use of cannabis.
Thailand’s decriminalization of cannabis improved their tourism and also sparked a change for other Asian countries when it comes to cannabis as now results are seen of the benefits that come with decriminalization, which could lead other Asian countries to follow Thailand’s steps and decriminalize the use of cannabis in the near future.
