Maintaining Your Lung Health

This past weekend my best friend and I played basketball at our local recreation center. After about twenty minutes my friend, a routine cannabis smoker, looked up at me with his hands on his knees, and said through bated breaths, “I can feel like the resin coating my lungs.” After an initial good laugh I thought to myself how can people clean their lungs out while being routine cannabis smokers. 

I found several at-home practices that can help users stay ahead of their lung health, and help them clean their lungs out. 

First of all, always keep your pieces as clean as possible. This may be slightly obvious, but a clean piece can significantly improve the quality of smoke entering the user’s lungs. All you need to clean your glass is isopropyl alcohol and coarse table salt. 

Green tea contains a multitude of antioxidants that can help reduce lung inflammation. Incorporating a cup of green tea in your morning or bedtime routine can help your lungs function more effectively throughout the day. The hot liquid can also clear out and break down phlegm that might be in your throat. 

Perhaps the most effective method of lung cleaning is steam therapy. Steam rooms or any other form of steam therapy are an extremely effective way of breaking down and draining mucus from your respiratory system. The warm air improves breathing as the warmth opens up airways. The opening of these airways helps mucus drain from your system. Steam is one of the few methods that offers instant breathing improvement and pain relief. Many gyms and recreation centers have steam rooms. I personally sit in my gym’s steam room for 10 minutes after every workout. For an at-home method, simply boil some water and hold your head, at a comfortable and safe distance, above the water to inhale the steam for 10-15 minutes. A warm shower can also offer the same effect. 

Essential oils can offer an easy overnight solution for clearing out lungs. Peppermint, pine, and eucalyptus are all expectant agents that break up mucus in your lungs and large airways. Before bed, mix one of these or several oils with a carrier oil (olive or coconut oil) and rub the mixture over your chest. As you sleep the oil combination will break phlegm up, allowing you to wake up to refreshment and smoothed breathing. 

Exercise improves all aspects of health, lung health being no exception. Exercise improves blood circulation and assists the body in draining unwanted products. The increased breathing rate during exercise forces mucus to leave lungs. 

Nobody wants to be constantly hacking, coughing, and wheezing; cannabis smokers are no exception. So add some of these practices to maintain lung health while continually smoking marijuana.
