Houston’s First Medical Marijuana Dispensary
By: Emily Jiannetto
Texas Original, a Texas-based marijuana dispensary, has just opened its doors at 1714 Houston Ave. It has become the first dispensary in the city; however, in Houston, only those with a valid prescription for marijuana can be sold the drug (Johnson).
In comparison to other states, Texas has a strict medical marijuana program. There is a narrow list of approved ailments that can give someone access to marijuana, which excludes chronic pain (Johnson). Also, Houston dispensaries can only prescribe low-THC products (less than 1% of THC) (Johnson). A primary care doctor cannot be the one to prescribe marijuana, and two doctors must agree on the decision to prescribe it (Johnson). There are less than 200 doctors which are certified to prescribe marijuana, making it difficult to access medical marijuana care (Johnson).
