Outdated Cannabis Laws in El Salvador

El Salvador, the country known for its beautiful beaches and volcanos is one of the many countries in Central America where cannabis is still illegal both recreationally and medically.
While Europe and the United States are progressing when it comes to the cannabis industry and its legalization both medically and recreationally, many Central American countries refuse to change their laws and promote the use of cannabis. “Weed is illegal in El Salvador; possession of any type of cannabis has severe legal consequences and will result in harsh punishment. As of right now, there is nothing that shows that the law will change anytime soon” (Galdamez 2021). This gives those suffering from chronic pain, chronic illness, or mental illness little hope for changes in their laws where they can have the option of any type of cannabis for their treatments or enjoyment.
The question that arises with this lack of change is what will it take for countries outside of Europe and the United States to change their cannabis laws for the benefit of their citizens rather than for the benefit of their outdated morals?
