Marijuana in the South
by Emily Jiannetto
It is known in the United States that the southeast portion of the country is known to have a more conservative government, and many of its citizens share those same values; this greatly affects the access that citizens have to marijuana. According to a Pew Research survey conducted in 2019, 91% of Americans surveyed believe that marijuana should be completely legal for both recreational and medical use (Daniller). However, many states are lagging behind in passing marijuana legislation–southern states in particular.Â
West Coast and northeastern states share the majority of the nineteen states (plus two territories and Washington D.C.) that have legalized recreational and medical use. On the other hand, southern states, including Georgia, the Carolinas, Kentucky, and Tennessee do not even have comprehensive medical marijuana programs. Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana do have medical marijuana programs, but no southern state has a recreational marijuana program.Â
