Why Are Federal Workers Still Banned From Using Marijuana?
By Emily Jiannetto
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has just issued a statement that reminds its employees that the use of marijuana is strictly forbidden, as well as even investing in cannabis stocks. Participating in the marijuana market–even if it is legal in the employees’ state–could result in legal or disciplinary action. While many states have medical or recreational cannabis markets, it is still illegal at the federal level.
From a legal standpoint, this ban does make sense, as federal workers would be under the direct jurisdiction of the federal government (which does supercede state law), but this statement does highlight the ridiculous stance that the United States currently has on marijuana. If so many states are legalizing the drug, and the majority of the country’s citizens agree with this ruling, then the federal government should modernize itself, and reflect the beliefs of the majority. That is not to say that cannabis is not without it risks, but so is alcohol, and nicotine, which are completely legal. Those who use cannabis should not bo ostracized, including federal employees.
