D.C. Passes New Workplace Protections For Marijuana Users
By Emily Jiannetto
The United States capital just passed a bill that will not allow employers to discriminate against employees who use marijuana for recreational or medical reasons. Employers cannot force employees to take drug tests for marijuana (Austermuhle). The caveat to this protection is that employees are not protected if they are using, or possessing marijuana at their place of work; also federal employees are not entitled to these protections, as cannabis is still illegal federally (Austermuhle).
D.C.’s legislation is not the first of its kind. States such as California, New Jersey, and New York have also passed protections for drug users. In Washington D.C., there are about 13,000 citizens enrolled in the medical marijuana program, so there are many who will benefit from the growing legislative protections that more liberal governments are passing.
