Possible Impacts of Italy’s Cannabis Laws on Tourists:
By: Kimberly Calderon
The majority of countries in Europe have legalized the use of medical cannabis, Italy amongst them, but the use of recreational cannabis remains illegal. What does that mean for tourists?
Italy is a popular location for travel but it is a country where cannabis is still illegal for recreational use. Although recreational use is still illegal, cannabis use/possession has been decriminalized which allows for fewer jailings of minor drug users. According to Roma Pass, “As Italy decriminalized drugs of lower-danger, this means that possession of cannabis for personal recreational use can still result in a fine, but it is not a felony per se” (Milan 2020).
Therefore, as a tourist, if you own a small amount of cannabis you might be subjected to a fine or/and your identification may be confiscated, but jailing and criminal charges would be out of the question due to the decriminalization of cannabis that has occurred in recent years. So, if you are a cannabis user planning on visiting Italy this summer, remember to keep this in mind so you can enjoy your trip.
