President Biden’s New Cannabis Pardon Helps Thousand Of People

Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

As part of President Biden’s campaign, he promised to work on decriminalizing cannabis. Over the past weekend, we saw that campaign promise be brought to life. According to CNN, “Biden on Thursday pardoned all prior federal offenses of simple cannabis possession, a move that senior administration officials said would affect thousands of Americans charged with that crime.”

Additionally, at the state-level, in this announcement, Biden expressed how states should rethink their simple cannabis possession charges. Further, CNN states how “… The President will task the Department of Health and Human Services and Attorney General Merrick Garland to “expeditiously” review how cannabis is scheduled under federal law, the first step toward potentially easing a federal classification that currently places marijuana in the same category as heroin and LSD.” In Biden’s video where he announced the steps he will take on this issue of cannabis, he expressed how cannabis decriminalization is important due to the fact that crimes within the possession of cannabis has led to a lack of employment, housing, and educational opportunities. The pardons that Biden announced will clear about 6,500 people, the number of current people who are convicted for the simple possession of cannabis. In more good news, the pardons will help out people who were convicted of cannabis possession under the District of Columbia’s laws, which is about another couple of thousand. While there is so much positive coming out of this announcement, we are still not fully there yet. Many people are waiting on President Biden to do even more under the umbrella of the cannabis topic.

There are still people in the system serving time and getting consequences for the possession of cannabis. One source from WKRN.com expressed how he is “Definitely waiting and expecting the president to do more than what he did yesterday.” Still, we have been waiting for news and an announcement like this for a while and not everything can be changed and dealt with overnight. Our country has not seen a step with cannabis legalization within Congress, while this is not legalization, Biden’s announcement shows that it is on his mind and is important to him.

  1. You actually make it seem really easy along with your writing but I find this topic to be really one thing that I think I’d by no means understand. It seems too complicated and very extensive for me. Politics??? I’ll get the hang of it…
