New York state is now accepting online applications for licenses to open recreational dispensaries. The license is called the Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary, otherwise known at the CAURD. The Office of Cannabis Management of New York will only leave the application window open from August 25th to September 26th.

Along with the short application window, this license will only be open—at least at first—to a select group of people. The licenses will be granted to those who have been harmed by the previous cannabis prohibition (Malone). This can include those from underrepresented backgrounds, as well as those who have been incarcerated for marijuana offenses and their family members (Malone). This action is a part of the Seedling Opportunity Initiative which blends social reform into marijuana legalization (Malone).
