The Botany of Desire

Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

If you’re like me, your cannabis book list grows faster than your favorite strain of Grand Daddy Purple. So to help take off some of that weight I read a must-read book about cannabis that is recommended to users and lovers everywhere: “The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World” by Michael Pollan.

“The Botany of Desire” is a captivating book that explores the relationship between humans and four plants: apples, tulips, potatoes, and cannabis. The book delves into the evolution of these plants and how humans have shaped their genetics and distribution.

In the chapter on cannabis, Pollan examines the history of marijuana use and the impact of its prohibition in the United States. He explores the science behind the plant’s psychoactive effects and its potential as a medicine. He also looks at the cultural significance of cannabis and how it has been used by different societies throughout history.

One of the most interesting aspects of the book is Pollan’s discussion of the “botanical arms race” between plants and humans. Pollan argues that plants have evolved to appeal to human desires, whether it is the sweetness of an apple or the mind-altering effects of cannabis. In turn, humans have selectively bred plants to enhance these desirable qualities. This has led to the development of countless strains of marijuana with different levels of THC, CBD, and other compounds.

Pollan’s writing is engaging and informative, and he has a knack for explaining complex scientific concepts in an accessible way. He also weaves in personal anecdotes and interviews with experts in the field, which adds a personal touch to the book.
