The latest talk of the town has been Appleā€™s new IOS 16 update. Some people love it and some people hate it. With IOS 16, there has been a lot of new features introduced, the star of the new features being that you can now track your medications through the Health app on your iPhone. Not only can you track your medications but the new software update provides information and education about different substances and the interactions your current ones have with others.

Among all of the substances that you can track in your phone, cannabis is one of the main ones. According to Kyle Jaeger, ā€œUsers can tell the Health app if they use alcohol, cannabis or tobacco to search for potential interactions between medications on your list.ā€ The Health app is able to look at the current medications one is taking and can connect it to if you are or are not able to use them with cannabis. ā€œAccording to Drugs.com, there are nearly 400 ā€œknownā€ interactions between prescribed medicines and cannabis ā€¦ā€ which not everybody knows about, Apple is taking that step to help educate others. With cannabis being much more prevalent in our world now in time, as of last year, Apple ended its restrictions on letting cannabis businesses own apps on the app store. Now, companies like ā€œEazeā€ are allowed to sell and promote their products through their own app on the app store. All of the cannabis interaction information that Apple is putting out through their Health app is backed up by ā€œElsevier, a leading publisher of health and science information.ā€

With Apple putting out information about cannabis, it serves as an example of how more large tech businesses are trying to get into the cannabis industry. Other tech-businesses that have gotten more familiar with the industry are Amazon, Facebook, Tik Tok, and Twitter. Though, Kylie Jaeger explains how some businesses still have a strained relationship with the cannabis industry. For instance ā€œIn contrast to Apple, Googleā€™s Android app hub updated its policy in 2019 to explicitly prohibit programs that connect users with cannabis, no matter whether it is legal in the jurisdiction where the user lives.ā€ Still, Apple being one of the leading tech brands among our society and taking the initiative to educate others on the use of cannabis and the safe ways to use it, is an exciting update within IOS 16.
